Holiday Weekend Moving in Kansas City — Pros, Cons, and Logistics

Published May 17, 2026 · 7 min read

Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas weekend moves in KC come with both real advantages (extra day off) and real costs (mover availability, traffic, family timing). Here's the honest breakdown.

Holiday weekend moves in Kansas City are a tradeoff. The pro: you get an extra day off work to actually do the move + the unpack. The con: every other DIY mover had the same idea, mover crews are often unavailable or premium-priced, and traffic patterns can either help (if everyone’s out of town) or hurt (if it’s a Royals or Chiefs home game weekend).

This guide covers each major US holiday weekend’s KC-specific reality + what to know about scheduling around them.

Memorial Day weekend (last Monday in May)

Pros:

  • 3-day weekend gives time for move + unpack
  • Spring weather usually good (mid-70s)
  • Cusp of peak season — not yet at July prices

Cons:

  • KU + UMKC May move-out chaos is still finishing through the prior week
  • Royals season is well underway — downtown game-day traffic if there’s a home game
  • Plaza + Westport restaurants packed for the weekend (parking + traffic)
  • Mover crews + truck rentals get premium-priced
  • Some lease changes happen May 31 / June 1 right after the weekend

Best fit: Memorial Day weekend moves work for KC residents who aren’t moving downtown/Plaza-adjacent + can do most of the work themselves.

July 4 (Independence Day)

Pros:

  • Often a long weekend (especially when July 4 falls Thurs-Sun)
  • Mid-summer school break — kids around to help
  • 4th-week-of-month timing (lease-changeover week)

Cons:

  • The worst possible KC move-weekend traffic — KC has multiple big July 4 events (Boulevardia, Worlds of Fun fireworks, riverfront fireworks, various suburban events). Roads + parking are chaos.
  • Heat + humidity peak this week
  • Mover availability is tight; many crews take the holiday off
  • Fireworks-related late-night street disruption
  • Lease changeover overlap (July 1 = major KC lease day)

Best fit: July 4 weekend moves should be early Saturday morning before the heat + before everyone heads to events. By 11 AM you want to be done loading. Skip Sunday entirely if you can.

Labor Day weekend (first Monday in September)

Pros:

  • 3-day weekend
  • Weather cooling (highs in low 80s typically)
  • Post-back-to-school timing — families settling in
  • Pre-fall transitions for many corporate relocations

Cons:

  • Some KU + UMKC + KCAI students still in the August move-in cycle
  • Some lease changes on Sept 1 (right after the weekend)
  • Mover availability tight for the holiday Monday specifically
  • Royals + Chiefs preseason events possible

Best fit: Labor Day Saturday morning is a solid move time. Monday itself is harder to staff and often costs more.

Thanksgiving weekend (4th Thursday in November)

Pros:

  • 4-day weekend for most people
  • Family available to help with the move
  • Off-peak season — pricing softens
  • November weather usually mild

Cons:

  • Family timing often complicated (some travel, some host)
  • Most Friday-Sunday post-Thanksgiving has people traveling
  • Black Friday + Small Business Saturday = retail-area traffic spikes
  • Mover availability variable

Best fit: the Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving is genuinely calm + cheap if you have flexibility on lease dates. Post-Thanksgiving weekend works for in-town family moves but check on mover availability early.

Christmas / New Year’s weekends (late December)

Pros:

  • Many people get extended time off — easy scheduling for movers
  • Off-peak season — cheapest pricing of the year
  • Often the only time of year you can move + immediately have a houseful of family to help

Cons:

  • Family timing rarely lines up for moving help
  • Real winter weather (snow, ice possible)
  • Holiday hosting + gift exchanges + travel — emotional bandwidth is limited
  • Some businesses + utilities are closed Dec 24-26 + Dec 31-Jan 1 (utility connections delayed)
  • New Year’s Day moves are awkward — most people are recovering

Best fit: the week between Christmas and New Year’s is genuinely calm + cheap if you can swing it. Many KC families do “low-stress moves” during this week — flexible timing, no work pressure, good winter pricing.

What changes about mover + crate availability

Holiday weekends affect three different services differently:

Moving labor crews: most charge premiums on holiday Mondays + may have limited weekend availability. Book early.

Truck rentals: premium pricing + tighter availability on weekends generally. Book 2-3 weeks ahead.

Crate rental (us): we operate through most holiday weekends. We close on Christmas Day + New Year’s Day; everything else is normal scheduling. No holiday surcharges on our weekly pricing. Same $89-$349/week grid year-round.

Holiday weekend traffic patterns in KC

A few specific KC traffic facts to know:

  • Royals home games (April-September): downtown KCMO traffic is heavy 2-3 hours before + after games. Avoid I-70 east near Truman Sports Complex.
  • Chiefs home games (August-January): even heavier than Royals. Avoid all I-70 east + I-435 south near GEHA stadium 4 hours before/after.
  • NASCAR weekends at Kansas Speedway: Bonner Springs / KCK roads packed. Affects west-metro + I-70 west moves.
  • Plaza Art Fair (September): Plaza area parking + access disrupted for ~1 week
  • Plaza Lights (Thanksgiving through January): Plaza-area evening traffic heavier than normal
  • Christmas in the Park (Longview Lake, December): southeast metro traffic on weekend evenings

If you’re moving near any of these patterns, schedule around them.

How crate rental fits a holiday-weekend move

A few specific holiday-weekend advantages:

  • We deliver before the weekend so the crates are at your house ready to use Friday-Monday
  • We pick up after the weekend at your convenience
  • No same-day-of-holiday hassle — neither delivery nor pickup needs to happen on the holiday itself
  • Extended rental window at a small cost — 2-week rental ($129-$349 depending on package) covers pack + move + unpack with no time pressure

For a typical Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend move, our pattern with customers:

  • Tuesday-Wednesday of holiday week: crates delivered, customer starts packing
  • Saturday or Sunday of weekend: actual move day
  • Tuesday-Wednesday after holiday: we pick up empties

That timing works the same for any 3-day-weekend holiday.

For a holiday-weekend KC move, check your address + book at least 2 weeks ahead.
