How KC Moving Crates compares — pricing, delivery, cancellation
Most moving-crate options in Kansas City fall into one of four patterns: daily-rate-with-weekly-minimum, quote-only, per-box self-pickup, or cardboard-from-the-store. This page puts all four side-by-side with our published model so you can decide before you commit.
Local KC moves only. Both your pack-up and move-in addresses must be inside our 60-mile service area from our Leavenworth, KS warehouse.

Our delivery model
Local KC moves only. Both your pack-up and your move-in addresses must be inside our 60-mile service area from our Leavenworth, KS warehouse — past 60 mi we don't serve. Delivery + pickup is a flat fee based on whichever of your two addresses is farther from us. Three tiers, no surprises:
Near zone (0–20 mi)
$25 flat for delivery + pickup, any package size, any day of the week. Same-day available before 11 AM.
Covers: Leavenworth, Lansing, Basehor, Platte City, Bonner Springs, Edwardsville.
Mid zone (21–40 mi)
$50 flat for delivery + pickup — covers most of the KC metro core.
Covers: KCMO core, Plaza, Brookside, Waldo, Westport, Crossroads, River Market, KCK, Mission, Prairie Village, North KC, Liberty, Shawnee, Olathe, Lenexa, Overland Park, Leawood, SE Overland Park, Lawrence, Eudora, Parkville, Riverside, Weatherby Lake.
Far zone (41–60 mi)
$75 flat for delivery + pickup — outer edges of our service area.
Covers: Independence, Lee's Summit, Blue Springs.
Two-address rule: the fee is set by whichever of your two move addresses is farther from our warehouse. Moving from a Near-zone city (Lansing) to a Mid-zone city (Brookside)? You pay $50 — the Mid-zone tier — because Brookside is farther. Moving cross-metro from Lawrence to Lee's Summit (both ends within 60 mi but one in Mid, one in Far)? You pay $75. Past 60 mi from us on either end and we're not the right service — try a long-distance mover.
Side-by-side: how KC crate options actually compare
Four common patterns in the Kansas City crate-rental market. We've made the table apples-to-apples: same row = same customer question. We don't name competitors directly — the patterns are what matter, and you can verify any given vendor against the column headers below.
| Question | KC Moving Crates | Daily-rate w/ weekly min | Quote-only providers | Per-box self-pickup | Cardboard at the store |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Can I see the price before I commit? | Yes — published $89-$349/wk grid, two-address calculator with flat $25/$50/$75 delivery | Yes, but framed as $/day with 7-day minimum — math is unclear | No — fill out form, wait for callback | Yes — per box (~$2.50/wk) | Yes — per box ($2-$5) |
| How is delivery priced? | Flat $25 / $50 / $75 based on whichever of your two addresses is farther from our warehouse | "Free delivery" advertised but no published distance cap or zone map | Varies; usually delivery is included but you can't verify until you've called | Nothing — you transport the boxes both ways | Nothing — you buy, haul, return, recycle |
| Which KC counties are served? | 7 counties on both sides of the state line — Jackson, Clay, Platte (MO); Wyandotte, Johnson, Leavenworth, Douglas (KS). Full map → | Operator-dependent; many spread across multiple metros so per-market depth is thin | Operator-dependent; verify in their quote | Wherever the store is — you transport from there | Wherever the store is |
| Are dollies + labels + ties included? | Yes — 1-5 dollies (per package), reusable zip ties, color-coded labels | Usually yes; verify per package | Varies; ask before booking | No | No — buy separately |
| If my move date slips, what happens? | Reschedule free with reasonable notice. Full refund 48+ hr before delivery; 50% refund inside 48 hr | Rarely published; ask before booking | Rarely published; ask before booking | No commitment — pay-as-you-go works in your favor here | No refunds on used boxes; reuse or recycle |
| Total time + trips for a 1-BR move? | 2 visits from us (drop + pickup). Your effort: 0 trips, 0 assembly. | Same — 2 visits from them | Same — 2 visits from them | 2 round trips from you (pickup + return), half-loaded car | 2-3 supply trips, hours of taping + assembly, breakdown after |
| Best fit when… | You want price clarity, a clean schedule, and zero cardboard cleanup | Pricing math doesn't matter to you and you're fine on the phone | You're already in a call-around vendor process | Tiny single-room move and you have the time + vehicle | Single-box short-distance move; long-distance (we can't help — crates can't leave the 60-mile local service area) |
Each column reflects pricing/policy patterns publicly visible in the Kansas City market as of mid-2026. Specific vendors may differ; verify the column criteria against any quoted provider before booking. We deliberately avoid naming competitors here — see our who-should-rent-crates guide for the broader fit analysis.

Comparison FAQ
Specific questions we get from customers researching crate rental in KC. For general questions see the site-wide FAQ.
Is moving crate rental in Kansas City actually cheaper than buying cardboard boxes?
For most moves, yes — once you add up new boxes, tape, packing time, and disposal trips. A typical 2-bedroom KC move runs $150-$300 in cardboard supplies; our 2-Bedroom Package is $159 for one week, includes dollies and labels, and we handle delivery + pickup. For studios and 1-bedrooms the math is closer, but the time savings (no assembly, no tape, no recycling-bin trips) usually decides it.
Why do some KC crate-rental companies hide their prices behind a quote form?
Two reasons we can verify: (1) it lets them price-customize per customer or per ZIP after you've already invested time in the form, and (2) it gives them a phone call to upsell. We don't operate that way — every package price is published, the delivery fee is one of three flat tiers ($25 / $50 / $75) calculated from your two addresses, and the sizing calculator gives you a total in 30 seconds with no email gate.
What's the catch with $2.50/week per box rentals at U-Haul?
The price itself is real — what's missing is everything around it. You pick up the boxes at the store and return them to the store, so you're making 2 extra round trips with a half-loaded car. There are no dollies, zip ties, or labels included. Store inventory is per-store and unpredictable. For a 1-bedroom move, the true cost is: $50 in box rental + ~$15 in gas + ~2 hours of your time. Our 1-Bedroom Package is $129 delivered, picked up, and includes 2 dollies (plus a flat $25–$75 delivery fee based on mileage).
How does delivery work across the Kansas City metro?
Three flat-fee tiers by driving distance from our Leavenworth, KS warehouse: Near (0–20 mi) = $25; Mid (21–40 mi) = $50; Far (41–60 mi) = $75. Past 60 miles we don't serve — we're local-only. Both your pack-up and your move-in addresses must be inside the 60-mile service area. The fee is set by whichever of your two addresses is FARTHER from us. Our /sizing calculator gives an instant exact fee for any pair of addresses.
Can I cancel my booking if my move date slips?
Cancel 48+ hours before your delivery date and you get a full refund on the package fee, no questions. Cancellations inside 48 hours of delivery get a 50% refund — by that point we've already pulled your crates from available inventory for your dates. (We don't sell crates and don't accept returns the way retail does — once your rental window starts, the package fee is non-refundable. You can still reschedule your delivery date for free as long as you give us reasonable notice.)
Do you charge separately for dollies, labels, or zip ties?
No. Every package includes the right number of dollies (1-5 depending on size), reusable zip ties, and color-coded room labels. The only thing added at booking is the $25 / $50 / $75 delivery + pickup fee based on your mileage from our Leavenworth warehouse — no add-ons at the door, no upsells at delivery.
Is there a minimum rental period?
One week. Most KC moves run 1-2 weeks (we drop crates the day before pack, pick up after unpack). Need longer for a staged or phased local move? Just tell us up front and we'll set the right window — extra weeks are $30-$90 per package.
Do you serve Lawrence, Eudora, or the Douglas County area?
Yes — Lawrence (~38 mi) and Eudora (~34 mi) both sit in our Mid zone ($50 delivery + pickup). If your other move address is also in the Mid zone (most of the KC metro), you're at $50 flat. KU calendar-driven moves (August in / May out) should book 3+ weeks ahead.
