Plaza-Area Colleges Moving Guide — Rockhurst, KCAI, Park University
Published May 17, 2026 · 7 min read
Three smaller KC colleges sit in or near the Plaza area: Rockhurst University, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Park University in Parkville. Each has a distinct move pattern. Here's how crate rental fits for each.
Beyond UMKC and KU, several smaller Kansas City-area colleges have meaningful move patterns each fall and spring: Rockhurst University, the Kansas City Art Institute, and Park University in Parkville. Each is small enough to be missed in the broad “college move” guides, but each has specific things to know.
Rockhurst University (KCMO, Plaza-adjacent)
Rockhurst is a private Jesuit university of about 3,000 students sitting in the Brookside / Plaza-edge neighborhood (54th & Troost area). Mostly residential — students live on-campus, in nearby apartment communities, or in shared houses in Brookside / Sunset Hill.
Campus housing:
- Corcoran, Massman, McGee, Xavier-Loyola halls — traditional residence halls
- Townhomes + apartment-style housing — for upperclassmen
Off-campus patterns: Rockhurst students often spill into Brookside character homes (rented as 3-4 BR shared houses), nearby Plaza apartments, or Westport. The neighborhoods overlap with UMKC’s, so move-week parking gets compounded.
Calendar: standard fall/spring. Fall move-in late August, spring move-out mid-May.
Crate fit: Rockhurst’s relatively small student body means we have plenty of inventory for the week. A Studio or 1-Bedroom Package covers most dorm + small-apartment moves. Shared 3-BR house moves pool a 3-Bedroom Package between roommates for $189/week. flat-rate delivery — all relevant addresses are in our Metro zone.
Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI, Plaza)
KCAI is a small private art college (~700 students) on Warwick Boulevard adjacent to the Nelson-Atkins Museum. The campus is compact and the student body is concentrated.
Campus housing:
- Nelson + Vanderslice halls — undergraduate residence halls
- Crossroads + Plaza apartments — many upperclassmen and grad students live off-campus
What’s different about art-student moves:
- Art supplies and portfolios add bulk that a typical undergrad doesn’t have — sketchbooks, paints, sculpting tools, framed work
- Studio gear from school doesn’t usually come home between semesters, but personal pieces do
- Fragile items in transit — plastic crates with rigid walls protect framed work and sculpture better than soft cardboard
Calendar: typical fall/spring, with some intensive summer + winter programs that shift moves to non-standard times.
Crate fit: KCAI students often need slightly more capacity than their square footage suggests because of art supplies. A 1-Bedroom Package ($129/week) typically fits a 1 BR + portfolio + tools. We can also do small-batch supplemental crate adds during the rental window if you misjudge volume. flat-rate delivery — KCAI’s address is well inside the Metro zone.
Park University (Parkville, MO)
Park University sits in historic downtown Parkville along the Missouri River — about 22 miles from our Leavenworth warehouse, in our flat-rate delivery Metro zone. Roughly 1,000 traditional residential students plus larger online + military populations.
Campus housing:
- Mackay Hall, Copley Quadrangle — traditional residence halls
- Newer townhouse-style upperclassman housing
Off-campus housing in Parkville: historic downtown apartments above shops, river-view condos, and family homes in newer Parkville subdivisions. Many traditional students live on campus or in nearby apartments; commuter students drive from across the metro.
Calendar: Park runs an accelerated 8-week term system for online programs, plus a standard fall/spring for residential students. Move-in for residential = late August; move-out = mid-May.
Crate fit: Parkville is ~20 mi from us — Near zone, $25 flat delivery + pickup. Dorm-sized moves fit our Studio Package ($89/week); apartment moves fit 1-Bedroom ($129/week) or 2-Bedroom ($159/week).
Other KC-area small-campus colleges
A handful of other schools have meaningful move volume worth noting briefly:
- William Jewell College (Liberty, MO) — small residential liberal arts college, ~700 students. Liberty is ~33 mi from us — Mid zone, $50 flat delivery + pickup. See Liberty service area.
- MidAmerica Nazarene University (Olathe, KS) — small residential, ~1,000 students. Olathe is inside the Mid zone ($50 flat) too — same rules. See Olathe service area.
- Johnson County Community College (Overland Park, KS) — large commuter college (~17,000 credit students). Almost no dorm population; few move-week patterns. JoCo addresses are all inside the Mid zone ($50 flat).
- KU Edwards Campus (Overland Park, KS) — KU’s metro satellite, mostly grad / professional / part-time students. Few moves directly tied to the campus.
What’s the same across all Plaza-area colleges
Three things consistent across Rockhurst, KCAI, Park, and the smaller schools:
- The same two weeks are the busiest — late August for move-in, mid-May for move-out. Book ahead.
- The neighborhood matters more than the campus — your specific dorm or apartment + its parking + its elevator situation drives the move logistics more than which school you attend.
- Crate rental usually wins the cardboard comparison for anything bigger than a single-bag freshman dorm move — assembly time + recycling time matter more than headline price.
